Distilled by WhistlePig in Vermont and bottled in partnership with Barstool Sports and David Ortiz, the brand is releasing the first bottling in their Legends Series - single barrels selected and finished in barrels containing David Ortiz's maplewood bats. It sounds zany and totally wile because, well, it is. I've never heard of something like this before. Bottled just in time for Opening Day of the 2022 MLB season. Let's step up to the plate.

  • This experiment is honestly so wild, it just works. This won't upset some of WhistlePig's Boss Hog greats, but for a 6yr rye, it has more flavor than it has any right to, and the toasted character really comes to life. While price isn't considered in the rating, it's inexpensive enough to justify a swing at, any day.

  • You might assume that a gimmicky, limited-edition Whistle expression that was aged with the Red Sox legend’s bats would be more flash than substance. And while I can’t tell you what exactly the addition of the baseball bat wood actually did to the overall flavor, this is a decent sipping whiskey that’s worth the $49.99 price tag.

  • Nose:

Floral, packed with honey, toffee, clove, pepper and maple candies. Toasty, rich, interesting.

  • Taste:

Medium to heavy viscosity on the palate, much more rich that standard PiggyBack which is a welcome surprise. Packed with flavor, there's tons of rye bread, toffee, honey, a prickle of ethanol and a big, toasted note: marshmallow, smores, peppery rye and a creme brulee that hangs on the back palate. Root beer candies.

  • Finish:

Long finish, this is the real winner here. Peppery pop, long root beer finish and a toasted note that lingers pleasantly.
