This whiskey comes from the Seattle, Washington-based American single malt trailblazer, Westland Distillery. Westland’s Garryana American Single Malt is an ongoing release that incorporates aging in Quercus garryana, a species of oak found only in the Pacific Northwest. In edition 9, Garryana incorporates oloroso sherry casks for the first time, in place of the usual PX sherry casks. Garryana Edition 9 is distilled from Washington select pale malt, Munich malt, extra special malt, pale chocolate malt and brown malt. It's aged in new Garryana oak, first-fill ex-bourbon and first-fill ex-oloroso sherry butts. 6,600 bottles are available at a suggested retail price of $149.99.

  • Nose:

Garryana is rich, buttery and oh so distinctive on the nose. Cream, cherries, raspberries, toffee, maple, butter.

  • Taste:

Rich, powerful and woody palate. Heaps of pepperiness intersperse with blasts of delicious sherry character, honey, malty goodness, root beer, caramel, sassafras, clove, cinnamon and raisin bread.

  • Finish:

Super long finish with a huge, satisfying clove note, plus pepper, smoke, oak, cardamom and a subtle orange peel note.

  • Overall:

Delicious, complex single malt that I absolutely adore. Few are doing it like Westland in the American single malt arena.

  • Score:

    92
