Weber Ranch Vodka is made from 100% Blue Weber agave, initially distilled in Jalisco, Mexico. It is then imported to the Weber Ranch Distillery in Muenster, Texas, where it undergoes additional distillation in copper pot and column stills, followed by filtration and bottling. This melting pot of unexpected origins and ingredients was brought to market last year by John Paul DeJoria, the billionaire founder of Patron Tequila. Clearly, there's a lot going on under the hood here and I haven't even gotten to the spirit itself. Let's dive in.

  • Clean and fresh nose with a hint of agave vegetal perfume. The agave is more apparent on the palate, with a low key blanco tequila flavor at the beginning of the journey. This quickly passes, leaving a more familiar vodka character in its place.

  • The palate is mostly neutral, with lemon, vanillins, a very faint agave-vegetal characteristic if you're looking for it, and some peppery astringency.

  • The palate is brighter and more fruit-forward than expected, touched with lemon and quite creamy, evoking both lemon curd and coconut cream at times. As the vodka developed in the glass, it reminded me of blondies, fresh from the oven.

  • Bolder than the aroma suggests, revealing neat layers of almond, lemon and light minerality. The agave builds out a stronger presence, not approximating the vibe of a tequila, per se, but something its own.

  • Nose:

The nose has a light, creamy quality of vanilla pastry and candied coconut. Digging deeper, the agave begins to reveal itself, though it remains incredibly subtle -- like a drizzle of agave syrup on a unsalted Ritz cracker.

  • Taste:

Bolder than the aroma suggests, revealing neat layers of almond, lemon and light minerality. The agave builds out a stronger presence, not approximating the vibe of a tequila, per se, but something its own. It remains unexpectedly sugary but not artificial; I'd circle back to the comparison of some sort of imagined agave candy or pastry.

  • Finish:

The finish comes and goes in the blink of an eye. Homemade whipped cream, citrus pith and a hint of ethanol. This is where you're reminded that Weber Ranch is a vodka through and through.

  • Overall:

Vodka is always a hard spirit to review due to its inherently aromaless and tasteless quality. That said, I think Weber Ranch provides just enough to chew on with its perfumed sweetness and oh-so-subtle agave character. It really is a fascinating little experiment. I can imagine this being incredibly popular on the market, especially as a first step toward agave spirits for the tequila uninformed.
