This release comes from the South Carolina brand, Virgil Kaine Lowcountry Whiskey, which sourced 5-year-old bourbon (mashbill: 75% corn, 21% rye and 4% malted barley) from MGP and finished it in toasted barrels that had been filled with vanilla smoke for several weeks. The bourbon spent three months finishing in the vanilla smoked barrels before being bottled at 116.8 proof.

  • Vanilla is front and center on the palate here, as you might expect, but there’s nothing sweet or artificial about it.

  • This pour is unique and interesting. Despite a few rough edges, it manages to nail a distinctive and complex finish for the greater good of the pour.

  • Nose:

Sweet and savory on the nose. Mostly caramel, pepper, a touch of baking spice and light oak.

  • Taste:

Moderate palate. The extra barrel finishing really shows here. Caramel and honey blend with light oak, heavy char notes, some vanilla bean and a bit of cracked pepper. Light cola note.

  • Finish:

Long finish — a bit hot but full of flavor. Cracked pepper, fresh sourdough bread, barrel char, tobacco and vanilla bean ride on out.

  • Overall:

This pour is unique and interesting. Despite a few rough edges, it manages to nail a distinctive and complex finish for the greater good of the pour.

  • Score:

    85
