Ungava Gin is a Canadian gin crafted with six Arctic botanicals hand-foraged from northern Quebec, including Nordic juniper, wild rose hip, Labrador tea, crowberry, cloudberry and a proprietary Arctic blend. The botanicals are dried and steeped for five weeks.
According to brand tasting notes, Nordic juniper gives bright citrus notes on the nose, while the palate combines citrus and subtle spice. Bottled at 43.1% ABV, Ungava Gin can be enjoyed on the rocks, with soda, or in signature cocktails such as the Aromatic G&T or Arctic Gold. The gin typically retails for about $50.
The obscure flavors and ingredients will leave you wondering, “just what is that flavor?” and reaching for more traditional supports “is that coriander?” But its mixability and unique color will probably have you reaching for it again.
All told, Ungava is a balanced, versatile, and likable gin, remarkably traditional in many ways despite its unorthodox botanical bill, but with enough distinction — and that unmistakable color — to merit continued exploration.
