This 14-inch-tall behemoth of a bottle is Trulussó, the latest tequila from the critically acclaimed Feliciano Vivanco y Asociados distillery. The facility has developed a reputation for quality additive-free tequilas as of late, namely stuff like Alma Del Jaguar and Lost Lore that have been running buck wild in social media circles. What we have here is a highlands tequila processed with a roller mill before undergoing open-air fermentation with Champagne yeast. The brand's reposado is aged eight months in American white oak barrels, bringing it in just a few months shy of an añejo.

  • A nice helping of darkened agave segues into orange rind, pineapple, almond and a honeyed caramel note. It's equal part earthy and tropical, both sides pulled off with a subtle touch.

  • Nose:

Understated and not particularly oaky. Apart from roasted agave, the biggest whiff I get here is a slightly funky hay note (absolutely not a bad thing). Everything else brings to mind a springtime farm: lavender, rose petals, tilled earth and grass.

  • Taste:

Ah, there's the oak! A nice helping of darkened agave segues into orange rind, pineapple, almond and a honeyed caramel note. It's equal parts earthy and tropical, both sides pulled off with a subtle touch.

  • Finish:

Dry medium-length finish with lots going on. The oak influence comes out guns blazing, accompanied by pangs of roasted nuts, butterscotch and a hint of cloves. The star of the show.

  • Overall:

I love how distinct and unexpected flavors evolve across the nose, palate and finish on this. It's got just the right amount of complexity under the hood, especially for those that like their reposado on the delicately sweet side. However, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention this clocks in at a suggested retail price of $149. Whether or not it's worth the cost of entry is up for debate, though there's no denying the ceramic decanter is a statement piece in its own right.
