Saga Spirits Group was founded by Wes Henderson, co-founder of Angel’s Envy, in 2023. The company's whiskey brand True Story debuted in October 2024 with two cask-finished offerings: True Story Finished Bourbon and True Story Finished Rye. True Story Finished Bourbon is sourced from three Kentucky distilleries and aged five to six years in new charred oak barrels, then finished in white Moscatel wine casks for six months before being bottled at 90 proof. It retails for approximately $60 per bottle.

  • This is a very fun release, the unique choice of cask finish and the more approachable ABV make it a good launch for the new brand.

  • Trying to replicate what the Henderson family found success with in the past, True Story Bourbon Volume 1 is a finished sourced product that has trouble delivering the elevated sip consumers may be expecting.

  • Wes’ fingerprints are all over this and it shares a ton of DNA with how Angel’s was made during his time — easy and light, not much substantial tannin and tons of sweetness with just a touch of acid. It’s easy drinking and without flaw.

  • Nose:

Sweet and light on the nose, there’s plenty of creamed corn, vanilla bean, a crackle of pepper, white grape and a touch of raisin sweetness.

  • Taste:

Moderate palate, not super rich, but plenty of texture here. Proof comes through nicely. Mostly white grape, sweet vanilla, and cream.

  • Finish:

Short to moderate finish. A bit going on, all sweet. There’s not a ton of complexity, but buttercream, vanilla, white grape and brioche sweetness comes right through.

  • Overall:

Wes’ fingerprints are all over this and it shares a ton of DNA with how Angel’s was made during his time - easy and light, not much substantial tannin, and tons of sweetness with just a touch of acid. It’s easy drinking and without flaw.
