Tres Tribus is the latest launch from Juan Coronado, the former Bacardi Rum ambassador who spearheaded Mijenta Tequila alongside Mike Dolan and Ana Maria Romero. The brand's Espadin is produced in Santa María Zoquitlán, Oaxaca, using wild foraged agave and volcanic water native to the region. In contrast to most mezcal brands, which introduce an Espadin first, this actually the fifth introduction to the Tres Tribus catalog.

A puff of smoke and a blast of herbs. Oregano, peppermint and rose petals are the biggest notes I get here, alongside lemon rind and that characteristic funky ash found in many Espadins.
Surprisingly light on its feet with sweet notes of honey, figs, cocoa and grapefruit. Plenty of agave character punctuated by a few of those herbs found in the nose. After a few sips, there's a tingling minerality that comes to play.
Long, smoky finish. There's a bit of slate lingering around and a vegetal bite that brings some welcome greenery into the equation.
Were I to draw up a spectrum from smoky to smokeless Espadins, I'd plop Tres Tribus' take on the spirit smack dab in the middle. There are some unexpected fruit notes, a smattering of herbs and a lingering ashiness that'd probably work great in cocktails. It's a microsom of everything you'd want in an entry-level mezcal.
