  • Nose:

Spicy and sweet at first sniff. Big pepper, ginger and rye spice pop immediately with layers and layers of brown sugar and maple. It’s spicy then sweet; it’s brutish but bursting with character.

  • Taste:

Rich on the palate: extremely chewy, syrupy and powerful. Maple, barrel char, rye spice, black pepper, cinnamon and brown sugar melds into a powerful rye-lover’s rye. Pleasant oak is here, but rye does the work carrying the profile, and it’s a banger.

  • Finish:

Long finish — spicy first and sweet second. Black pepper, rye spice, maple and waffle cone combine. A light touch of blackberry and sweet oak show with a touch of barrel char and a final sip of cracked pepper and maple.

  • Overall:

This year's Thomas H. Handy is easily my second favorite in the collection. This rye is bold and unrelenting with big sweet undertones and an undeniable mission to show that not all ryes taste like grass and spearmint. It’s a bruiser, and it’s beautiful.
