  • Yamazaki 18 is a rich full whisky experience I’d love to have a reoccurring affair with. It is the dram that makes me sad about the current state of Japanese whisky.

  • There is a rich and milky feel to the whisky. The flavors found here sound like they would make a fabulous dessert: dates, figs, honey, walnuts, and cinnamon.

  • The silky palate mixes gentle smoke with mouthwatering dry notes—oak, leather and tea, finishing with a smoky exhale accented by orange peel and espresso.

  • This is a lovely malt with a great deal of complexity despite the low proof.

  • Nose:

Moderately intense nose. Plenty of roasty, malty goodness pairs with sweet sherried character, plus fluffy biscuits. The sherry presents with lots of fruit fruit (pear and cherry), a little vanilla sweetness and a pop of citrus — tangerine, perhaps? Plus a bit of spice and root beer.

  • Taste:

Moderate mouthfeel. Barley malt character is joined here by a hefty serving of oak with quite a bit of tannin, plus sweet sherry, macadamia, a big tobacco note, melon and melting butter, plus ginger spice and an umami flavor reminiscent of dashi.

  • Finish:

Long, satisfying, layered finish. Close your eyes, and it'll transport you to a damp forest. Plenty of tobacco and dried fruits, plus some vanilla shortbread and lots of oak and char.

  • Overall:

This is a lovely malt with a great deal of complexity despite the low proof.

  • Score:

    93
