The Senator Straight Rye Whiskey, distilled in Indiana and aged, blended and bottled in Kentucky, is a barrel-proof small batch release. Aged at least six years in new charred American oak, it combines 10 to 20 barrels. With a mashbill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley, it has a proof range of 112-121. A 750ml bottle retails for about $80.
Tropical rye notes of orange, melon, guava, and grape on the finish, along with chocolate, ginger, herbs, and white pepper. Lots of heat, but also depth, flavor, and balance.
Slightly malty back on the nose, but a majority of this is just super dusty. Subsequent sips of this definitely build upon the last. A slight tart cherry and cacao nibs build, with traces of cardamom coming through on the back end. Really solid sipper, but lacks a bit in the wow-factor.
