This is one of three core releases from The Legendary Silkie, an Irish whiskey brand produced by Sliabh Liag Distillers. The smokiest of the bunch, this is a blend of five triple-distilled single malts, one of which is peated. Here's how the blend breaks down: 35% peated single malt aged in bourbon casks, 30% single malt aged in sherry and new oak casks, 20% single malt aged in imperial stout casks, 10% single malt aged in red wine casks and 5% single malt aged in Oloroso casks. The final blend is then finished in new oak and imperial stout casks and bottled at 92 proof.

  • The use of five different casks is an interesting approach, though I can’t say I get strong notes from most of the casks in play.

  • This combination, along with the three other components of the blend, yields an attractively smoky whiskey that's reminiscent of some of the finest malts from Islay, Scotland.

  • Although Sliabh Liag calls this release their smokiest whiskey, it isn't so heavily peated that it will turn off imbibers open to trying this style.

  • This is a very good release and easily my favorite of the Silkie collection! The peated malt is really well integrated here.

  • Nose:

Lovely on the nose. A hint of peat and ash meets apples, pears, peach rings and a sweet caramel character.

  • Taste:

Moderate palate — not super viscous but satisfying. Light barrel char, a hint of salinity, orange peel, caramel candies, fresh sourdough.

  • Finish:

Long finish that's satisfying and easily the most complex of the Silkie range. Creamy sweetness, honey, almond, peaches and pear with a hint of char and peat.

  • Overall:

This is a very good release and easily my favorite of the Silkie collection! The peated malt is really well integrated here.

  • Score:
