  • The bottom line is that not all old whiskies are truly very good, particularly when it comes to bourbon, and are priced based more on rarity than quality. This new Buffalo Trace bourbon from the Last Drop, however, turns out to both rare and excellent, and seems destined to become a collector’s item.

  • To my surprise (and to my disdain because I probably won’t ever experience another pour of this!) it is, unequivocally, insanely good.

  • Nose:

On the nose, this expression is gorgeous and wildly rich, stuffed with deep salted caramel, hazelnut, strawberry syrup, Luxardo cherry, leather, tobacco, clove and gingerbread.

  • Taste:

Very oaky, absolutely delicious. Dark chocolate, cherry cola, leather, tannin, apple pie, cinnamon, blackberry and a big tobacco note.

  • Finish:

The finish is long, leading with cinnamon and nutmeg, then segueing into sweet caramel, mocha, frosting, cherry cordial and toasted oak.

  • Overall:

27-year-old Buffalo Trace is, it turns out, delicious. Oaky? Yes, for sure. But not overwhelmingly so, given the age. This is really flavorful, delicious stuff.

  • Score:

    96
