Released in February 2023, THE DEACON comes to us from Sovereign Brands in collaboration with Pernod Ricard. This is Sovereign's first whisky release, and the company said it planned to "disrupt the whisky category" with this release, which is approachably priced at $39.99 and eye-catching in its flashy copper bottle. We don't know where THE DEACON was distilled, but we do know it's a blend of Islay and mainland Scotland single malts, and we can assume the liquid probably comes from Pernod Ricard-owned distilleries given the public partnership.

  • A unique whiskey in a unique bottle, to say the least, Deacon steps over the “too pretty to be good” fear that may arise from its brash labeling with ease. This is best enjoyed neat but totally approachable on the rocks for guests who may grace your halls.

  • Nose:

Light and sweet on the nose, Deacon is more about the malt and less about the cask with apples, brown butter, pie crust and toffee on the nose. Light hint of grain, moderate oak.

  • Taste:

Full of apple butter, tropical fruit, sweet cream, vanilla bean and a faint prickle of ethanol. Light and sweet is the name of the game once again with a pleasant bit of oak showing through, along with a hint of cinnamon.

  • Finish:

The finish is where Deacon shines, puffed full of pie crust, lemon curd, honey and vanilla cream with a dash of pepper, clove and a hint of candied ginger.

  • Overall:

A unique whiskey in a unique bottle, to say the least, Deacon steps over the “too pretty to be good” fear that may arise from its brash labeling with ease. This is best enjoyed neat but totally approachable on the rocks for guests who may grace your halls.
