  • This is a great classic style gin with a little more kick. It retains the quality of the original botanist but some notes are uplifted by the higher ethanol and others are slightly more hidden.

  • At 92 proof, standard Botanist is hardly a gun shy gin. At 100 proof, it’s even more present in the glass and in a cocktail, though the differences are moderate at best. As it stands, I like the two expressions about the same amount.

  • Nose:

Familiar juniper aromas, piney, sweet and resinous. There is a hit of ethanol but it fades quickly. Lemon peel lifts everything up and is accompanied by a slight sea breeze quality.

  • Taste:

The sweet juniper carries through into the palate and is more pronounced. For its proof, the ethanol hit is very subtle. There is slight anise like quality in the background along with a light pepperiness.

  • Finish:

The sweetness lingers for a time with a peppery note and zesty hit of citrus along the sides of the mouth.

  • Overall:

This is a great classic style gin with a little more kick. It retains the quality of the original botanist but some notes are uplifted by the higher ethanol and others are slightly more hidden. If you have ever had the Botanist traveler’s exclusive it is comparable but still unique enough. The Distiller’s Strength was designed specifically for cocktails and it would make a fantastic addition to any bar looking for a higher proof gin that retains its flavor.
