The Balvenie Stories – A Day of Dark Barley is a 26-year-old Scotch whisky from the Balvenie Distillery in Speyside. It is made with dark roasted malted barley mixed with traditional Balvenie malted barley and matured for 26 years in first-fill bourbon barrels. The whisky is bottled at 47.8% ABV and hosts a suggested price of $799.
Soft, floral and bright with notes of lemon peel, olives and white chocolate. The sweet palate offers flavours of baked apple and plums, with a hint of smoke.
It’s actually engaging, and invites delving into the palate, where more charms await. Lively with notes of sweet honeycomb and brown sugar, the initial rush of sweetness quickly takes a dive as savory elements emerge: toasted sesame, flamed orange peel, allspice (so heavy after a time), and tobacco leaf are all in effect. Somewhat drying on the finish, with spice lingering on the tongue for ages.
