The Balvenie Peated Cask 17 Years is a Speyside whisky produced by The Balvenie. Made from 100% malted barley, it is aged for 17 years in casks that previously held peated Balvenie single malt. The whisky is bottled at 43% ABV and priced around $120.
Quite a funny whisky, I would say. It was a little bit of this and a little bit of that all the way. I guess the new american oak casks are to "blame". Easy to drink, nothing fancy about it. It changed from a funny sweetness (almost perfume) to citrus and spices. Interesting. It actually reminds me of Balvenie New Wood, also 17 YO.
Balvenie is one of those big Speyside whiskies that can stand up to the smoke. This one will not appeal to everyone, but it makes for an interesting diversion.
