A 2022 release from Iowa-based non-distilling producer Templeton, this is the fourth whiskey in the brand's Barrel Finish Series. Templeton Stout Cask Finish spent six years initially aging and then three years finishing in bourbon barrel-aged chocolate coffee stout casks.
All in all, this is a fun rye expression to have around for entertaining a mixed crowd of whiskey and non-whiskey drinkers alike, especially if you want to make some of your favorite cocktails bright(er).
With subtle notes of raw coffee beans, it has a long finish that’s dry, yet creamy and moderately grainy with robust flavors that are both rustic and oddly decadent at the same time.

House Review
Nose:
Funky and unique on the nose, there’s brown sugar, toffee, ginger and a hint of stout influence.
Taste:
Pleasant palate with moderate complexity. Baking spice and stout notes take center stage. With the base whiskey leaning more spice and savory, this works well with the stout influence — it's complementary.
Finish:
Moderate to long finish, more stout roasty-coffee notes linger with honey, rich caramel and a punch of baking spice.
Overall:
I’m always wary when stout finishes come into play because they can be so heavy-handed. This release from Templeton walks a fine line of flavor and fun and makes for a unique pour this holiday season. See also: fun Manhattan base.
