A June 2023 release, this whiskey is the second in Irish producer Teeling's Wonders of Wood series, in which the brand experiments with unusual casks. This single pot still whiskey is triple-distilled from a recipe composed of half malted and half un-malted barley. Per Teeling, Portuguese oak is native to the Iberian Peninsula and features a higher tannin content than most oak variants used for aging whiskey. Let's check it out!

  • I love the breadth of Teeling’s recent bottlings, but I can’t say this one is one of my favorites.

  • Nose:

Bold and interesting and full of interesting woodiness. Sweet caramel, spicy oak, a touch of tannic funk and a candied ginger note that’s really interesting.

  • Taste:

Moderate mouthfeel with some younger wood notes, light must, pepper and a touch of spice. This is interesting but a touch disjointed. The viscosity is pleasant and the proof welcome. Tons of spice and candied ginger.

  • Finish:

Moderate finish full of ginger, fresh cedar, wood spice, honey and pepper. Clove, maple and a touch of tannin comes through with green saplings and a touch of must.

  • Overall:

I love the breadth of Teeling’s recent bottlings, but I can’t say this one is one of my favorites.
