  • Dark chocolate is divine on the palate, and it’s complemented by coconut, black forest cake, and barrel char. The finish is long and wellspiced, brilliantly balancing darker notes with spice and oak.

  • The upper palate carries a lot of weight on the finish: light toffee, menthol, wintergreen, and spiced pineapple linger here. Dark caramel, vanilla extract, and wood sugar provide a sweet finish across the tongue and throat, though a bit shorter than the notes sticking on the roof of the mouth.

  • With its tannic and jammy profile, this, for me, is truly a red wine drinker's whiskey — and a damn good one.

  • Nose:

Rich, sweet nose filled with salted caramel and a variety of dark fruit notes: tart black cherry, fig, plum.

  • Taste:

Dark fruit profile continues onto the palate, which is jammy and has a moderately viscous mouthfeel. Prunes, boysenberry, a bit of oak and tannin and a faint earthy profile toward the back palate, with tobacco.

  • Finish:

The finish leads with tobacco, then strikes a nice blackberry note, joined by a touch of raspberries, and concludes with tannin.

  • Overall:

A very pleasant single malt. The port works nicely with the distillate. With its tannic and jammy profile, this, for me, is truly a red wine drinker's whiskey — and a damn good one.

  • Score:

    91
