Stranahan’s Diamond Peak Caribbean Rum Cask is an American single malt whiskey bottled at 90 proof. It is the third limited release in the Diamond Peak series and blends six- to nine-year-old whiskey aged in new American oak barrels. The whiskey is finished in rum casks sourced from the Dominican Republic, Barbados and Martinique. Suggested retail price is $79.99.
The sweeter notes are well-tempered by dry oakiness. The finish borders on bitter, but the whiskey’s winning nose and palate outshine the weaker finish.
Traditional single malt grain sweetness with some secondary wine cask influence adding layers of dried red fruit and tropical notes; tasty and a lot of fun.
All in all … yeah, this works for me. The tropical fruitiness of the dram sometimes feels subtle, and sometimes feels more dramatic, but it continues to creep in, showing several dimensions. It’s a good showcase for the blending that makes up the core of the Stranahan’s ethos.
