Stauning Smoke is a single malt whisky from the Danish distillery Stauning. Made with locally produced barley, it is smoked using peat and heather. The whisky is aged for 5-6 years in a mix of first-fill ex-bourbon, ex-Madeira, ex-Jamaica rum and virgin American oak casks. It is open-floor malted and double distilled in small flame-heated pot stills. Bottled at 47% ABV, a it retails for around $68.99.
Very good to great. I think I would have liked this more had I tried it before Kaos, which ultimately made more of an impact. That being said, this is a solid smoky single malt that is just as good as any lightly smoked single malt in Scotland.
Okay, I get it now. This is an exceptional peated whisky, for either an introduction to peat or the well-seasoned peat lover. The semblance to Islay whiskies is there, but in a much softer and mellower sense.
