Stauning Kaos Triple-Malted Whisky is produced by the Stauning Distillery in Denmark. This blended whisky combines three single malts: Stauning No-Smoke Single Malt, Stauning Malted Rye and Stauning Smoked Single Malt, all of which are floor-malted at the distillery. The whisky is aged in first-fill Maker's Mark casks. Bottled at 92 proof, it has no stated age and retails for around $90.
This is great. Could easily stand up to the classic Islays and other smoky malts with enough commonality to compare but enough uniqueness to set itself apart.
The flavors of this whisky blast through with a lot of variety, but don't spend a long time with you. Some classic rye tastes are present, and some very unique ones shine through as well. It is an entirely pleasant experience that makes you want to keep sipping.
This goes in different directions, in my opinion. There’s a clear Nordic footprint with the rye and the pine needles, but also a honey sweetness that doesn’t blend in entirely. Too many ideas for one expression, if you know what I mean? Overall the spicy, woody notes are quite loud too.
The peatiness (more on the sweet than the briny or rubbery part of the spectrum) carries through into the finish, along with fruity sweetness and a dash of black pepper.
Spices build up slowly on the palate to a nice peak with honey, butterscotch, and dried fruits underneath, while a touch of smoke adds a nice complexity.
