Loch Lomond's Spearhead is a single grain whisky. Spearhead is made with an "infrared toasting process," which Loch Lomond claims to be the only distillery in Scotland to use. The whisky is finished in a combination of traditional (70%) and infrared-toasted (30%) barrels. The infrared barrels are toasted using an infrared heat source, which allows for fine control. Loch Lomond claims this toasting releases "sugars from the wood that are then caramelized to give a complex range of sweet notes."

Apples, bananas, pears and a good bit of honey, almond, cracked pepper and sweet cream. Not wildly complex, but it's textbook grain whiskey with telltale sweetness and fruit.
Moderate mouthfeel, sweet honey and apples. Some pepper, leather, faint ash and slivered almond. For 43%, it's fairly hearty, a pleasant surprise
Short finish: a touch bitter, full of apple butter, lemon zest and pepper.
Not bad at all. It's definitely grain whiskey, but it's pleasant, easy to drink and has far more character than I find in a good deal of single grains. Yum.
