The whiskey is blended from 51% rye and 49% malted barley and finished in sherry casks. It is named after Davis Hogue, Knowles-Carter’s great-grandfather, who distilled moonshine during Prohibition. It's distilled in Indiana at MGP.

  • At the end of the day, I’m impressed that the team involved here took the time to make a thoughtful spirit, rather than just a blatant cash grab.

  • I think this is perfectly fine when it comes to a rye taste. Its welcoming and soft for that style of whisky.

  • The finish is long with a honey sweetness balanced by lingering spices and a touch of cherry pie. Delightfully complex!

  • Overall, this is a tasty first release for SirDavis, and if bottle costs weren't a factor, I'd consider it a pretty versatile option at home or on-premise.

  • Nose:

SirDavis is light on the nose; it doesn't jump out of the glass but has plenty of dusty rye grain character, joined by clove, lots of pepper, walnuts, bittersweet dark chocolate and some subtle sweet maple character.

  • Taste:

Light to medium mouthfeel, yet the flavor profile is quite rich. Rye spice carries on heavily with plenty of pepper and some nutmeg, plus toasted walnuts, more maple and dark chocolate and some spearmint.

  • Finish:

Long finish with oak, charred walnuts, pepper, anise, tobacco and pine.

  • Overall:

This is really interesting. The nose leads you to believe it will be a tame, subtle pour, yet the palate is packed with flavor. SirDavis sips above its proof and is a pleasant, peppery rye. The sherry finish is inconspicuous but contributes some faint maple sweetness. All in all, SirDavis is far more distinctive than your average celebrity whiskey and better than most. I think this could totally rock in a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned, with its distinctly spice-laden profile and relative richness. Of course, probably the most distinctive aspect of SirDavis is its flashy bottle, carved with grooves and adorned with that golden horse silhouette. It's a flashy bottle that will look great on any bar — and the juice inside is pretty darn good, as well.
