Shortbarrel Four Grain is a wheated bourbon made from a blend of four- to five-year-old Kentucky whiskeys and undergoes secondary aging in Atlanta, Georgia. The mash bill consists of 65% corn, 20% wheat, 12% malted barley and 3% rye. It is bottled at 92 proof, non-chill filtered and typically sells for around $45.
On the palate, sliced Golden Delicious apples lead, accompanied by a modest hint of clove. The mid-palate shifts to blackberries that are less sweet and less plump, highlighting the firmer, more tannic side of wild fruit rather than the juicy berries found at the grocery store.
The palate was also quite light, continuing the theme from the scent with baked apples up until the back end. It’s as the tasting ends and the finish begins that the bourbon really (and finally) develops some heft, with the finish being the most flavorful part, leaving a weighty sweet vanilla note to linger on.
