Saint Liberty Bertie's Bear Gulch Straight Bourbon Whiskey is made from a mashbill of 70% corn, 27.5% rye and 2.5% malted barley, then triple pot distilled and aged at least four years in a mix of 53-gallon #3 char and 30-gallon #4 char barrels. Crafted in Texas and bottled at 43.5% ABV, it is proofed with Rocky Mountain water, the same source used by bootlegger Bertie Brown in 1920s Montana, for whom the bourbon is named.
There’s a lot of dark chocolate on the back end, which really works nicely as a finishing note against a rather hoary, aggressive attack. Hints of Japanese togarashi spice things up in an unusual yet quite likable fashion.
