  • The palate balances sweetness and spices—a bit tannic from the extra maturation in toasted oak, but well-rounded with flavors of cherries, chocolate, and spice, leading into a gentle, satisfying finish.

  • It’s tasty, it’s deep, it’s dark and warm with a bold character that works in cocktails. As much I hate to say it… Sagamore Spirit Double Oak seems to be a good use of a second cask, I’m going to enjoy drinking through this one!

  • Tasted against a similar whiskey like Michter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Rye, the Sagamore is more delicate and nuanced, showing a surprising restraint on the woodier notes as well as the rye spice.

  • Nose:

Spicy and herbal nose — initially reminds me of a classic MGP 95/5 rye but with more depth. A big dill note meets cinnamon, clove, spearmint, sarsaparilla, browned butter, raspberry, demerara and a touch of buttermilk and frosting.

  • Taste:

Moderate viscosity. Tannic, drying and super spicy on the palate, but with a big oaky spine and some sweetness to balance. Pepper, clove, cinnamon, dill, brown sugar, cherry cola, honeycrisp apple, candied orange.

  • Finish:

The finish takes a surprising turn, kicking off with a cool campfire smoke note that was nowhere to be found on the nose or palate (this makes perfect sense after reading that the finishing barrels are toasted) followed by some cola, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and brown sugar, plus more tannin.

  • Overall:

This is a lovely rye. The added oak shines, joined by heaps of spice and plenty of balancing sweetness. It’s great neat and would be incredible in a Manhattan (or your rye whiskey cocktail of choice). Also: We don't include a "color" section in our reviews because for 95% of whiskeys it's an eyeroll-worthy exercise in grasping for a synonym for "straw" or "amber," but oh boy, the color on this one is incredible, especially for a NAS whiskey — a deep, dark crimson-brown.
