This is a big, bold crush of a whiskey. There’s nothing subtle or unusual, here, but a real Granddaddy Bourbon that wouldn’t be out of place in any glass – neat after work, over ice with a pal in the study, or as the base of a super old-fashioned.
The long, enjoyable finish is earthy, but there’s an unwanted bitterness at the end that cannot be denied. If not for the bitter end, this would rate much higher.
I’ve referred to Russell’s Reserve 10 year as an amazing “session whiskey” a lot over the last few years due to it’s ease to drink and its ability to provide enough interesting flavors to ruminate over.
It’s a robust bourbon that’s as comforting as a big warm hug… unless you don’t like hugs. In which case it’s as comforting as something else that you do (like a great bourbon perhaps).
A nose of cinnamon, butter, roasted wood and vanilla with a palate consisting of a complex oaky sweetness alongside orange, dark chocolate, leather and baking spices.
While it’s not often cited as people's favorite Wild Turkey product, it's a must-have for anyone seeking a traditional higher-aged, lower-proof sipping bourbon.
