  • The 2023 release of Remus Gatsby Reserve falls just short of last year’s whiskey, but it’s still a superlative in a world of so much mediocre, and a bottle worth adding to your collection.

  • The more austere leatheriness of the whiskey fades with time in glass, but the experience remains intense, all black fruit and spice, with some gritty char clinging to the finish and, like Repeal VII, a dollop of mint to close things out.

  • It leans into this old-school, MGP-style profile without being dominated oak. Great stuff.

  • Nose:

Black pepper and root beer on the nose, sweet maple and a solid wallop of oak. Nicely structured with a lot going on.

  • Taste:

Moderate palate — nice viscosity but not syrupy. Caramel, honey, tobacco and a hint of black tea. Nice and rich with a hint of root beer.

  • Finish:

Long finish with tons of toffee, oak, caramel candies, root beer and a bit of black tea.

  • Overall:

This year’s Gatsby Reserve is a bold and oaky pour. It’s not the brashest, the hottest or the boldest, but there’s tons going on. It leans into this old-school, MGP-style profile without being dominated oak. Great stuff.
