Redwood Empire Lost Monarch is a blend of straight whiskeys sourced from MGP in Indiana. This bourbon-rye blend features 65.4% rye, 30% corn and 4.6% barley. It is aged for 3 years, consisting of 3 to 5 year old rye and 4 to 12 year old bourbon. The whiskey is then bottled at 90 proof.
This full-bodied whiskey goes down with a fruity and soft finish. The fruitiness would certainly make this whiskey an ideal base for richer stirred cocktails like Manhattans.
For the most part it lands on the “Mid Shelf” side, but the extra sweet and fruity pop after some very hard “chewing” convinced me to get it through the threshold (but just barely) because I’m a sucker for that type of fruity and sweet whiskey that has a lot of tropical rye character.
Drinking this whiskey I kept thinking, is this the new...old High West? A blend of bourbon and rye, Lost Monarch offers an usual range of bourbon and rye flavors.
