Plantation Original Dark Rum, produced by Plantation and owned by Maison Ferrand, is a dark rum from Trinidad and Tobago. The blend combines rums from Jamaica and Barbados. Jamaican rum ferments for two weeks and is distilled entirely in pot stills, then matures 10 to 15 years on the island. Barbados rum ferments for three days, is distilled in pot and column stills, and matures one to three years. Both rums are then shipped to France for an additional three to six months of maturation. The rum is bottled at 40% ABV in a 750 mL bottle priced at $19.99.
The secondary aging in cognac barrels imparts a touch of hogo, or “funk” that’s noticeable on the rich and velvety palate, along with dried fruit, vanilla and clove.
Given all that flavor (not to mention the double-aging process), it’s a pleasant surprise that Plantation Original Dark Rum has a suggested retail price of just $17.99. That’s a whole lot of rum for not much cash, which puts this one squarely at the front of our rum shelf.
