Released in 2023, this is the seventh rye release in Pinhook's Vertical Series. For its Vertical Series, Pinhook has taken a group of MGP rye barrels and continues to release a batch of them each year, one year older than the year before. This allows fans to taste the effects of age on the whiskey without other variables involved. Blended from only 28 barrels, this was the most limited release to date in the Vertical Series.

  • Still a bold and flavorful rye worthy of consideration. Not regressing, to be sure, but proof that age doesn’t always bring dramatic improvement to a whiskey.

  • That 95% rye mash bill had my expectations conditioned for somewhat aggressive spice on the palate, but I was met with a mellow, tannic sweetness that was a little surprising and very sippable.

  • Nose:

Rich, lovely nose with lots of cocoa plus anise, rich gingerbread and cinnamon.

  • Taste:

Spicy and delicious on the palate. Tons of ginger, nutmeg, brown sugar, peppermint and a big heap of anise.

  • Finish:

The finish is surprisingly sweeter and lighter than the palate, making for a nice contrast. Fresh-basked sugar cookies, light oak with a touch of tannin, and more gingerbread, as well as pine.

  • Overall:

Really tasty, spicy rye. Pinhook's Vertical Series continues to get better with age.

  • Score:

    92
