The brand's Espadin bottling is produced in Oaxaca, Mexico. Agaves are extracted with a horse-powered mill, roasted in conical pit ovens with Huizache wood and volcanic rocks and fermented in wooden casks.

  • Nose:

Crisp, clean and green on the nose. A raw vegetal note halfway between agave and cactus, some grassiness, hay and an undercurrent of sweet smoke reminiscent of barbequed fruit.

  • Taste:

Fresh herbs and crunchy greens continue onto the palate. Caraway seeds, coriander, cilantro, pear and lingering honeydew melon. It has a grassy, in-your-face brightness that reminds me a lot of sotol, combined with hints of pine resin and smoked wood found in many artisanal mezcal bottlings.

  • Finish:

The finish is equal parts fruity and bitter, with flashes of papaya, tarragon, marjoram, sea salt and ground black pepper.

  • Overall:

A lovely mix of botanicals and fresh greenery that's rare to come by in a typical espadin. At $75, this is priced like a solo sipper and absolutely drinks like one, too.

  • Score:

    88
