Père Magloire VSOP is a Pays d'Auge Calvados aged for at least four years in oak casks. Père Magloire, the leading brand of Calvados in France and the rest of the world, is owned and produced by the Debrise-Dulac company which was established in 1821. The fruit is all from the grand cru Pays d'Auge and distilled twice on column stills before aging in oak. It is bottled at 40% ABV and averages around $35.
From there, this VSOP develops nicely, with mature apple notes, caramel, pie crust, and vanilla. The finish offers some notes of root beer and cloves, plus some of the rustic lumber character that tends to come with young brandies.
Silky and almost slick on the palate, this spicy sipper starts with vanilla, oak and a hint of orange peel, then accelerates through baking spice to hot cinnamon and cayenne.
