Paul John Brilliance is an Indian single malt whisky distilled in Goa from six-row barley sourced from the Himalayan foothills. Aged 6–8 years in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, it is non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV.
I was pleasantly surprised by this whisky. Paul John online identifies Brilliance as their “Flagship” whisky and I certainly would agree. There is a lot to like.
Brilliance is unpeated and is a delight: rich, full, young but not immature, and with lime and citrus Starburst chews, sweet candy, and some icing sugar, it trips across the palate. Conclusive proof that Amrut isn't the only Indian game in town.
It’s a very standard-style single malt without anything to expressly love or despise. It’s pleasant without being distinct and while sippable seems to work better in cocktails.
The palate does manage to kick things up with notes of incense, red pepper, hefty baking spices, and toasty, chewy wood notes. Surprisingly, there’s a lot of character here, and a deft balance that showcases wood and spice. The finish surfaces light fruit notes, giving it a pleasing (yet simple) finale.
