  • If one were to add bits of dried apricot to a bowl of sweet corn cereal and make it boozy, that's the main flavor profile of this whiskey.

  • Old Grand-Dad 7 Year Bottled in Bond Bourbon offers a more robust and enjoyable sip with enhanced aged oak and deeper flavors compared to its non-age-stated counterparts, though these improvements come with a higher, market-level price tag.

  • At $39 this is a huge bargain for a high-grade 7 year old bourbon of which I have consumed far more than I can readily admit.

  • Nose:

The nose is lovely, fruity, sweet and fun: vanilla bean, Smarties candies, cinnamon roll, granny smith apple.

  • Taste:

The palate is warm and moderate in viscosity. Tart cherry and chopped peanuts mingle with fudge, custard, waffle cone and cinnamon. Leather and a bit of minerality linger in the background. This is really nice bourbon. It's fruity, nutty, warming and has a perfect amount of oak.

  • Finish:

The finish is dry, tannic, long and satisfying — the highlight of the pour. It concludes with dry walnut, leather and ash, plus sweeter notes — crème brûlée, black cherry, plum. From there, it segues into sweet tobacco and an interesting meaty note, plus some more minerality, apple peel and a puff of cotton candy.

  • Overall:

This is outstanding bourbon for $40. It's balanced and lovely, sips great neat and will be a cocktail rockstar. It delivers a level of oaky backbone that its non-age-stated counterpart doesn't — albeit at a higher price tag.
