Beam quietly rolled out this 16-year-old edition of Old Grand Dad Bourbon in September 2024. Not too much is known about this bourbon, other than it's made from a mashbill Beam describes as "high rye" (almost certainly the usual Old Grand Dad mashbill of 63% corn, 27% rye and 10% malted barley) and is bottled at 50% ABV.

  • This bottle of Old Grand Dad 16 was almost everything I wanted in a bourbon. I honestly loved it, but I felt like the finish was a bit shorter than I wanted it to be and the fruit content wasn’t as varied as I thought it would be for 27% rye.

  • This is a great pour. It’s not the best extra-aged Beam out there, but it’s damn good.

  • The resulting liquid carries age incredibly well on the nose, and there’s both familiarity and novelty on a balanced, spice-forward palate. It’s really the thinner-than-anticipated palate that keeps this bourbon from soaring higher.

  • Nose:

Heavy oak and peanut brittle, this is gorgeous at first whiff. Punchy honey roasted peanuts and brittle, tobacco, toffee and sweet graham cracker.

  • Taste:

Moderate palate, sneaky low proof with a viscosity that coats the palate nicely. Lots of sweet caramel, toffee and brown butter. It's a touch muted, but there's plenty going on here that’s enticing.

  • Finish:

Long finish — the star of the show. Heavy oak, toffee, salted caramel, cake batter, almonds and tobacco.

  • Overall:

This is a great pour. It’s not the best extra-aged Beam out there, but it’s damn good. And knowing Beam, it won’t be the last.

  • Score:

    88
