  • All in all, the effect here is one that is pretty well balanced, but arguably missing an extra gear or level of assertiveness that the consumer may be expecting given the elevated price point.

  • Old Forester 1924 starts with a near-superlative nose, though the palate and finish don’t quite soar as high.

  • It is a fine-tasting bourbon, but I’m not overly excited about it.

  • 1924 brings a new, fun look to the Whiskey Row releases. It's unique, which stands out nicely as I generally have felt like the previous batches mostly just tinkered with oak and proof

  • The Whiskey Row Series is back in the spotlight thanks to 1924, debuting a new mashbill and a 10 year age statement, but despite a satisfying sip, its price will be a point of contention.

  • I’ve already polished off my sample bottle and I feel inclined to buy one myself (this sample was generously provided at no cost by the brand) because the flavors in this whiskey strike an impressive balance and scratch an itch for well-aged bourbon.

  • Nose:

Rich on the nose, heavier on the baking spice than previous Whiskey Row releases, especially the 1920. Baking spice, clove, cracked pepper, some tobacco and hefty maple. Surprising, given the lower rye content but the nose is the nose!

  • Taste:

Sweet on the palate, creamy and light on oak. Creamed corn, butterscotch, toffee and some sweet caramels. Lighter on spice and oak here. The proof is sneaky; it doesn't taste hot and has a pleasant viscosity without any notable burn.

  • Finish:

Medium to long finish. Cherry cordials pop here with a richer, darker finish compared to the palate. Sweet, savory, creamy and a fun pop of fruit.

  • Overall:

1924 brings a new, fun look to the Whiskey Row releases. It's unique, which stands out nicely as I generally have felt like the previous batches mostly just tinkered with oak and proof. If you've been looking for something new or didn't find the original releases to be for you, this is a great release to dive into, as it's definitely the most complex so far.
