Old Elk Distillery's Four Grain is a 105.9-proof whiskey made from a mash bill of 51% corn, 22.5% wheat, 19% malted barley and 7.5% rye. This bourbon is a blend of 6- to 7-year-old high-malt bourbon and 6-year wheated bourbon.
This whiskey takes the drinker on a full journey, albeit not a complex one; I wanted a little more considering the make-up, but overall, this is enjoyable and makes for a great sip.
The aroma is fairly standard with vanilla, caramel, and grains -- particularly cereal with almonds and when water is added, the sweet corn notes shine a bit more. The barrel spices add some dimension to it all.
This expression is also very well executed, providing a complex and interesting experience in which the various grains are neither overshadowed or overwhelming.
The resulting whiskey is an expectedly smooth and sweet bourbon that surprises you with its spicy finish, but I just wanted more, especially compared to its great Double Wheat counterpart release.
