In case the label left any room for confusion, this is not a celebrity-backed tequila. Purportedly made with an additive-free recipe at NOM 1517, Not A Celebrity Tequila (let's just call it NACT) is a blunt response to the Hollywood attitude the agave spirits industry just can't seem to shake year after year. Peruse the brand's website, and you'll find on-the-nose slogans like "focused on what's *inside* the bottle" and "built on ingredients, not IMDB." As for the tequila itself: officially debuted in 2024, highlands agave, autoclave cooking, roller mill extraction and 40% ABV.

  • Decidedly bitter — in a good way. Agave segues into a flavors of roasted coffee, cinnamon and fennel. Hints of citrus rind and mint give it a little levity, but the overall experience definitely leans acidic.

  • Nose:

The aroma is dark and earthy, centered around a big whiff of raw agave. Dig deeper and there's some black pepper, tarragon and minerality that give this a punchy saline character.

  • Taste:

Decidedly bitter — in a good way. Agave segues into a flavors of roasted coffee, cinnamon and fennel. Hints of citrus rind and mint give it a little levity, but the overall experience definitely leans acidic. Shocked to see that this was distilled from highland agave considering how quintessentially lowland the palate is.

  • Finish:

A piquant finish weaves in nice hints of licorice, cardamom and black pepper. Again, all very dark and earthy.

  • Overall:

This is a tequila that defies the formula in more ways than one. It has a distinctive character of spice, herbs and brininess that almost resembles an after-dinner digestif. Considering it clocks in at just $40, I'd say this punches way above its weight class and is well worth purchasing as a solo sipper. Intriguing stuff; interested to see what this brand comes up with next.
