Today's review comes to us from Ranulfo Garcia Pacheco - distilling an Espadin on refrescadera for NETA, and sold through the new subscription service Agave Mixtape. Ranulfo distilled this particular batch, ESPRAN1906, in El Sauz, Miahuatlan and was fermented with native yeast in cypress. NETA is starting to trickle nicely into the US, so I'm looking forward to giving this a go. Let's dive in.

  • Overall, this is another home run by NETA. Well selected by Agave Mixtape. This batch from Ranulfo embodies all the things I really love, and delivers a complexity not always found using Espadin alone. That fantastic, buttery structure of the palate is equally memorable and delicious.

  • Nose:

Rich, pungent and decadent. Cream, cocoa, butter and roasted agave permeate throughout while notes of pine, sweet honey and crisp minerality keep the tone balanced.

  • Taste:

Rich on the palate, with the return of a complex, buttery mouth feel. Big cream cheese frosting up front, with nutty undertones. Pepper and honey at first, followed by rich minerality. Hint of wood smoke, vibrant cedar and earthiness are present throughout. Really opulent palate overall, with a mouth feel that I typically only find in oily pechugas.

  • Finish:

Long finish, packed with plenty of earth, minerality and a savory meaty quality that offsets the sweetness pleasantly. Impressively flavorful, each note hangs for quite some time.
