Minor Case Straight Rye Whiskey Finished in Sherry Casks is produced by Limestone Branch Distillery and distilled at MGP in Indiana. Released annually, it is made from a mashbill of 51% rye, 45% corn and 4% malted barley. Aged 2 years, the whiskey is finished for up to 8 months in sherry casks from Meier’s Winery and bottled at 45% ABV. It is named in honor of Minor Case Beam, a pre-Prohibition distiller and great-grandfather of the Limestone Branch founders.
While this is unabashedly a rye, with flavors of cinnamon, black pepper, and oak, the sherry comes to the fore again in the guise of grape soda, sweet cherries, and chocolate. The finish is sweet and oak-driven, with good length.
There's a very light rye pepperiness but then the sherry once again takes over. The other end of the spectrum from many of the rock 'em, sock 'em ryes available, and more of an intro style.
Minor Case Rye offers a soft yet complex and well integrated whiskey that will surprise you at how well developed it is...especially considering its age.
