This wheated bourbon comes from the Denver, Colorado distillery, Mile High Spirits. From the brand's Fireside series, this 5-year-old whiskey features a mix of Minnesota white wheat, Colorado white wheat and cara wheat, which combine to make up 20% of the mashbill. The rest of it is filled in by 70% Colorado corn and 10% malted barley. This single-barrel bourbon is bottled at 133.1 proof.

  • This is a big, brash bourbon. It rides the knife’s edge of being too much to handle. I kept bracing myself for off-notes to jump up and ruin my experience, but nothing seemed to pop up.

  • High proof equating to impact isn’t always a guarantee with wheated bourbons. Iet’s very easy to become overbalanced, overly tannic, and even astringent. Fireside Wheated Bourbon never crosses over to any of those territories, and instead offers a full-flavored sip that any wheated bourbon fan would love.

  • A great single barrel. I can see why this stood out enough to select.

  • Nose:

Powerful nose loaded with honey, char, cherry and some tobacco. A prickle of ethanol, but that's to be expected at 130-plus proof.

  • Taste:

Pleasant palate, full of honey, toffee, tobacco, barrel char and a rich cherry character. The youthful funk from the other two Mile High expressions I’ve tried is gone, and that’s delightful.

  • Finish:

Long finish, driven by char and honey, with solid tobacco, cream and honey character.

  • Overall:

A great single barrel. I can see why this stood out enough to select. With the youthful graininess out of the picture, this is a very good whiskey.
