Midleton Very Rare 2020 was produced by Irish Distillers, a subsidiary of Pernod Ricard, from whiskeys aged 13 to 35 years in lightly charred ex-bourbon American oak barrels. It was bottled at 40% ABV and hosts a suggested retail price of $199.
Fresh and fragrant on the nose with green apple, glazed fudge doughnuts, vanilla, peppercorn, cinnamon, and nutmeg. American oak plays its part with toffee and vanilla flavors, while little explosions of pot still spices burst among fruity red apple and orange peel notes.
I wanted there to be a bit of a boost on the flavors to make it a little more memorable but it was still delicious served neat. The flavors change in your mouth from fruity to tangy to spicy. There’s a long finish with citrus and spices.
