  • This is truly one of the finest toasted barrel finishes I’ve experienced—a must-try!

  • It’s a bit lighter bodied than the 2021 release with a slightly drier profile but still every bit the toasted bourbon standard bearer.

  • Well, this was an odd pour... slightly off bourbon tones feel tampered with somehow.

  • A hit of tart green apple appears on the mid palate to soak up the sweetness and tame the toasted/baked spice. That tartness drives the flavors into the finish, which flows out in a spark of gingery heat and charred oak.

  • Michter’s latest foray into toasted barrel finishing builds on the brand’s classic bourbon profile and pushes into remarkably floral territory. It’s a fascinating look into what the company can do by pulling certain levers in the aging process.

  • At the end of the day, this release can’t quite match the depth and complexity of Michter’s own 10 Year Bourbon expression from this year, which is one of my very favorite releases of 2024 to date, but this is still sure to delight those who enjoy the sweet, toasted baking spice profile in particular.

  • This year’s Michter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon is pleasant and dare I say, crushable.

  • Nose:

Rich, toasty and lightly oaky on the nose with lots of marshmallow, honey, a pop of brown sugar and brioche.

  • Taste:

Moderate palate. It's not wildly complex, but it paints a pleasant picture. Sweet brown sugar, crème brûlée and some cinnamon, marshmallow and toffee. Lightly oaky, this is nicely balanced but ultimately a sweeter pour.

  • Finish:

Moderate finish. Pleasant richness here with more oak character, sweet buttercream, cinnamon, candied walnuts, brown sugar and a crackle of pepper.

  • Overall:

This year’s Michter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon is pleasant and dare I say crushable. It’s not the most complex, but I really like the restraint that the toast shows here. It’s not a toast explosion. It’d be super easy to overdo, and yet it’s balanced and just works. Nicely done, Michter’s.
