Distilled in Vaughan, Ontario, at Last Straw Distillery, Mandakini Original Malabari Vaatte is an unaged spirit made from sugarcane extract. The spirit is long-fermented and pot-distilled to 46% ABV. It draws influences from Kerala’s 400-year-old toddy-making traditions and the botanical heritage of Hortus Malabaricus, a 17th-century treatise on the region’s flora. Malabari refers to people from Malabar, a historic spice hub on India’s southwest coast, while vaatte is the Malayalam word for distillation.

  • It is quite inoffensive, and it doesn’t feel like 46%, which to some extent is to its credit. Light, sweet, a little sharp, yet the downside is that there is too little to distinguish it.
