  • While Cellar Aged may be a bit much for the typical Maker’s Mark fan, there’s certainly enough to enjoy here to merit sampling it side by side against the company’s standard expressions — and especially its cask strength offerings

  • Maker’s Mark fans have clamored for years for older, age-stated whiskey. I’m happy to report the wait was very much worth it.

  • It's nuts how much complexity lives in this pour, and it seems to shout that Maker's isn't content to be ignored. Wildly good, this is as close to a wheated bourbon of my dreams as I've had.

  • Nose:

A powerful nose: full of classic Maker's notes, caramel, baking spice, soft oak, honey and buttercream. Lots more oak than a standard Maker's Mark, and tons more baking spice as well.

  • Taste:

Viscous on the palate and rich, this is packed full of dessert and baking spice. It's a good bit oakier than any Maker's releases I've had before, but not too oaky. The extra oak is complementary to gobs of caramel, brown sugar, butterscotch, clove and nutmeg, cinnamon and buttercream. Red berries and a pop of blackberry. Lovely complexity.

  • Finish:

Long finish, stretching for ages. The extra aging here shows. It's sweet and dessert-forward with plenty of tobacco, sweet oak, a touch of raisin and nutmeg. It holds here on the finish for ages.

  • Overall:

This is about the best Maker's Mark that I've had. The extra tannin from cellar aging is extremely graceful, completely complementary. The baking spice and dessert character of standard Maker's Mark Cask Strength is dialed up, practically to 11. It's nuts how much complexity lives in this pour, and it seems to shout that Maker's isn't content to be ignored. Wildly good, this is as close to a wheated bourbon of my dreams as I've had.
