Distilled in 2008, this release from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society features Macallan whiskey aged in both an Oloroso butt and then finished in a First Fill Oloroso Hogshead. Bottled at 63.3% ABV, this is about near the top of the ABV scale for recent Macallan releases from any bottler. Bottled without coloring or filtering, this should be an elusive treat as one of SMWS's most highly sought after and expensive bottlings in some time as part of a recent SMWS trilogy.

  • Nose:

Spicier and packed with tobacco, this release is packed with character that mimics the first, albeit with tons of tobacco, raisin bread and sherry character.

  • Taste:

Rich on the palate, spicy and funky. Earthier and packed with toffee, minerality, figs, honey, creme brulee and currants.

  • Finish:

Long finish. Spicier than the others, and a touch heavier on the ethanol as well. Spicy, sweet, funky, earthy and savory. A heck of a combo that dials the spice up to 11.

  • Overall:

Overall, this is a winner as well, but fans of Macallan will need to embrace their spicier sides to get a full dose of enjoyment from this delicacy.
