Living Souls Ninety-Nine & One is a blended Scotch whisky created when a small amount of three-year-old grain whisky was accidentally mixed with heavily peated 18-year-old Ledaig single malt. The resulting blend consists of 99% 18-year-old single malt and 1% three-year-old grain whisky, giving the expression its name. It is bottled at 46.3% ABV and typically retails for £55 to £58 (around $68–$72).
Familiar and warming. A dry, spiced arrival brings pepper and soot with a little salty soy sauce. The berries are also spiced and doused in charred orange oil, which I’m sure is a thing… It leaves a medium-long and drying, spicy finish with a sour flourish; a little menthol and clove. Really quite lovely; a sherry maturation with a light touch.
Freshly polished leather and smoky tar lead to a lighter palate that unveils brown sugar, treacle, and rich fruitcake batter, with a lingering sweetness, hints of red fruit, and a touch of bittersweet spice.
